Mervyn Smith obtained a Diploma of Law from the University of Cape Town in 1956 and was admitted as an Attorney in 1959, a Notary Public in 1960, a Conveyancer in 1961 and an Appraiser in 1973. He has been part of Minde Schapiro and Smith since 1960 and lent his name to the firm together with stalwarts such as David Minde, Manny Schapiro and Barry Schapiro. Mervyn Smith has extensive experience in Commercial Law, Property Law, High Court Litigation and Wills and Estates and has been the senior partner of the firm for many years. He has honoured the legal profession by serving on various law society committees, not least of which was his stint as President of the Cape Law Society and the Law Society of South Africa. Mervyn Smith still serves as an active member of the Ethics Committee of the Cape Law Society .
